The Kayas - Mijikenda home-states - are not only remnants of unique forest ecosystems with rich flora and fauna, but also represent valuable cultural centres. Thus, the Kayas are known for cultural and spiritual rites and for arts, such as the Vigangos (wooden figures). In addition, Kayas are important places that maintain social cohesion and coordinate numerous processes in society. Eva Wiegert, cultural scientist, will spend two weeks at the beginning of February 2023 studying the cultural assets of the Kayas, the vigangos. The focus of her study will be on analysing the historical and recent relevance of the vigangos, for elders and the society, and against the background of global arts studies.
